This page currently shows the beginning of the documentation of the Lighthouses of Argentina.  The pictures below are linked to the relevant photo on the web (thus making available to you a higher resolution picture.)   I am very grateful to Russ Rowlett at the University of North Carolina for his excellent Lighthouse Directory for the outline.  Each lighthouse name is linked to (in our editorial opinion) the best reference site for that light. 

Río Uruguay and Río de la Plata

AR 1 Stella Maris

Located at the end of the south breakwater at the entrance to the inner harbor of Conceptión del Uruguay, a city about 280 km north of Buenos Aires.

AR 2 Martin Garcia Martín García

Isla Martín García is located in the mouth of the Uruguay River close to the Uruguayan shore.  (Previously the island had been used as a prison for out-of-power politicians.) Located near the south end of the island. Tours of the island are available from Buenos Aires.

AR 2B Buenos Aires Outer Breakwater South End

Located at the southeastern end of the long outer breakwater that protects the modern harbor of Buenos Aires. Accessible only by boat.

AR 3 Atalaya

The older light now stands on the grounds of the Atalaya Yacht Club. Located at Atalaya, on the south bank of the Río de la Plata about 8 km north of Magdalena.  Don't confuse this with the lights with the same name in Spain.
AR 4 Pontón Recalada (Light and pilot ship)

Anchored in the very broad entrance to the Río de la Plata, marking the beginning of the long Punta Indio Channel leading to Buenos Aires, about 140 km away. Ships arriving from overseas take on pilots here. Accessible only by boat.

AR 5 Cabo San Antonio

Located about 8 km north of San Clemente del Tuyú on the southern cape of the Bahía Samborombón.

AR 6 Mar del Tuyu Mar del Tuyú

This light is said to be the first privately-installed light in the country. Located on the coastal road in the seaside resort of Mar del Tuyú, about halfway between Cabo San Antonio and Punta Médanos.

The nearby town of San Bernardo has a web page for the lighthouse. Located off route 11 halfway between Mar de Ajó and Pinamar.

AR 8 Querandi Querandí

Located about 15 km south of the Mar Azul beach resort; accessible by 4WD vehicles on the beach.

The city of Mar del Plata is a fishing port and Argentina's largest seaside resort. Located on a promontory on the north side of Mar del Plata.

Located about 8 km south of Cabo Corrientes in the city of Mar del Plata, the country's leading beach resort.

AR 10 Miramar Miramar

Located on the Avenida Costanera in the center of the beach resort city of Miramar.

The lighthouse was replaced by the Miramar Light. Located on the point at the entrance to the municipal nursery on the southwest side of Miramar, about 2 km from Miramar Light.
AR 12 Quequen Quequén

Located east of the mouth of the Río Quequén in Quequén, the seaport of the city of Necochea.

AR 13 Claromecó

The lighthouse is adjacent to a popular seaside spa, the Balneario Claromecó.  Located on the coast about halfway between Necochea and Bahía Blanca.

AR 14 Recalada a Bahia Blanca Recalada a Bahía Blanca

Prefabricated in France by the same company that built the Eiffel Tower, this soaring lighthouse is the tallest in the country, the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere, and among the tallest in the world. Located on the coastal road about 7 km east of the resort of Monte Hermoso, marking the entrance to the Bahía Blanca in southern Buenos Aires province.

AR 15 El Rincón

This must be one of the tallest concrete lighthouses in the world; it guards a principal entrance to the seaport of Bahía Blanca. Located about 30 miles northeast of Pedro Luro on the Península Verde, a 25-mi long peninsula at the southern entrance to the Bahía Blanca. There does not appear to be any road access to this site.
AR 16 Segunda Barranca

Located on a sandy headland about 75 km east of Carmen de Patagones, the southernmost city of Buenos Aires province. There does no appear to be any road access to this site.

Northern Patagonia

AR 17 Río Negro
(Faro de la Boca)

This is Argentina's oldest surviving lighthouse and the first built on the coast of Patagonia. The area is known locally as La Boca (the mouth), referring to the Río Negro. Located on the west side of the mouth of the Río Negro, adjacent to the El Cóndor resort; accessible via provincial route 1 from Viedma.

AR 18 Belén Located on the Península Belén, at the northern entrance to the Golfo San Matías, about 110 km west of Viedma.

The area around the lighthouse is a nature preserve, the Área Natural Protegida Bahía de San Antonio. Located off National Route 3 on the northeast side of the Golfo San Matías, perhaps 30 km east of San Antonio Oeste.

The range guides vessels arriving at San Antonio Oeste. Located on a peninsula sheltering the harbor.

The range guides vessels arriving at San Antonio Oeste. Located on a peninsula about 5 km southeast of San Antonio Oeste. Accessible by road.
AR 20 Punta Tehuelche

Located on the Golfo San José, on the north side of the Istmo Ameghino, the narrow neck of land connecting the Península Valdes to the mainland. There does not appear to be any road access to this site.
AR 21 Almirante Brown Located at the end of the Península Buenos Aires, the northwestern corner of the Península Valdes, marking the entrance to the Golfo San José. Apparently accessible only by boat or helicopter.

Located at the northernmost point of the Península Valdes marking the southern entrance to the Golfo San Matías. Accessible at the end of provincial route 3, 75 km northeast of Puerto Pirámides.

Located at the southeastern tip of the Península Valdes, about 65 km southeast of Puerto Pirámides on provincial route 2.

Punta Lobos
AR 24 Morro Nuevo Located atop a high headland at the southernmost point of the Península Valdes, marking the northern entrance to the Golfo Nuevo. There does not appear to be any road access to this site
AR 24F Punta Flecha This light probably replaced the Golfo Nuevo lighthouse. Located atop a steep headland just off highway 42 about 15 km northeast of Puerto Madryn.

Located on the east side of a promontory about 8 km southeast of Puerto Madryn.
AR 25C Punta Conscriptos Located atop a steep cliff about 800 m south of Punta Conscriptos, a promontory about 30 km southeast of Puerto Madryn. Site open but probably difficult to reach.
AR 26 Punta Ninfas

Located on the point marking the southern entrance to the golfo Nuevo, at the end of provincial route 5 about 50 km east of Puerto Madryn.
AR 27 Chubut

Located about 6 miles south of Puerto Rawson on the coastal road to Playa Santa Isabel.

Sibling of Faro Cabo Dañoso. Located off national route 3 about 65 km south of Rawson.

AR 29 Cabo Raso

Located on the cape about 100 km south of Rawson. There does not appear to be any road access to this site.
AR 29S San José (Cabo San José) The original lighthouse was an octagonal cast iron skeletal tower with lanytern and gallery. Located atop a prominent cape about 18 km south of Cabo Raso and 40 km northeast of Camerones. There is no road access to this site.
AR 30 Bahía San Gregorio

This lighthouse replaced the Isla Leones Light. Located about 13 miles south of Camerones on the heights of the Cabo Dos Bahías, the northern entrance to the Golfo San Jorge.
AR 31 Isla Leones

The island lies off the Cabo Dos Bahías; the light was abandoned due to the difficulties of landing men and supplies on the island. The lighthouse is clearly endangered and likely to fall into ruin. Accessible only by boat or helicopter.
AR 31A Cabo Aristizábal Located on a prominent and rugged cape about 8 km south of Bahía Bustamante. Accessible only by boat or helicopter.
AR 32 Cabo San Jorge Cabo San Jorge

Located about 13 km north of Comodoro Rivadavia, the southernmost city of Chubut.

Southern Patagonia

AR 33 Olivia Located just off national route 3 on the north side of Caleta Olivia, on the Golfo San Jorge.

Located in the town of Mazarredo on the southwest coast of the Golfo San Jorge.
AR 35 Monte Loayza

Located on the south coast of the Golfo San Jorge, about 135 km northwest of Puerto Deseado.
AR 36 Cabo Blanco

Active naval station, with 1-story station building and several communications towers. Located on a rocky headland at the end of provincial route 91 about 90 km north of Puerto Deseado.
AR 37 Punta Guzmán Located on the point about 15 km south of Cabo Blanco.
AR 38 Beauvoir (Puerto Deseado) Light mounted in the 28 m tower of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Guardia, the one tall structure on the skyline of Puerto Deseado.
AR 39 Isla Pingüino Located on an island off Cabo Mírador, about 18 km southeast of Puerto Deseado. Accessible only by boat or helicopter.
AR 40 Punta Medanosa

Located on a rocky point off the end of provincial route 85 about 35 miles south of Puerto Deseado. It is not clear whether there is road access to the light station.
AR 41 Cabo Guardián

Located on a prominent headland about 160 km southwest of Puerto Deseado. There does not appear to be any road access to the site.
AR 42 Campana

Located on Punta Mercedes, a headland about 175 km southwest of Puerto Deseado.
AR 43 Cabo Dañoso Located on the point of the cape about 65 km northeast of Puerto San Julián.
AR 44 Cabo Curioso Cabo Curioso

This unusual and historic lighthouse is located about 20 km northeast of Puerto San Julián, marking the entrance to the harbor of the city.

This range guides vessels departing Puerto San Julián. Located on a hillside east of the Bahía San Julián, about 7 km northeast of Puerto San Julián.

AR 44J Justicia Alta (Puerto San Julián Fourth Range Rear)  This range guides vessels approaching Puerto San Julián through a winding estuary, the Bahía San Julián. Located on the west side of the San Julián estuary on the south side of Puerto San Julián.

AR 47 Río Coig Sibling of Faro Cabo Dañoso. Located on the north side of the entrance to the Río Coig, east of Puerto Coig and about 175 km north of Río Gallegos.
AR 48 Cabo Buen Tiempo (Cape Fairweather) Located on the cape at the end of provincial route 55 on the north side of the entrance to the Río Gallegos.
AR 49 Cabo Vírgenes

This historic lighthouse marks the eastern entrance to the Strait of Magellan, along with the Chilean lighthouse at Punta Dungeness about 10 km to the southwest.  Located at the end of provincial route 1 (unpaved) about 80 miles (unpaved) south of Río Gallegos.

Atlantic Coast Tierra del Fuego

Located 800 m southeast of the border between Chile and Argentina south of the Strait of Magellan.
AR 50 Punta Páramo Located at the end of the Península El Páramo, a long sand spit partially enclosing the Bahía de San Sebastián. Accessible only by boat.
AR 51 San Sebastián

Located off national route 3 about 25 km east of the town of San Sebastián, marking the southern entrance to the Bahía de San Sebastián.
AR 52 Cabo Peñas Located on a headland about 6 miles southeast of Río Grande.
AR 53 Cabo San Pablo (1945) It was damaged in an earthquake in 1949 and has been leaning ever since. The active light is close by (separate entry).
AR 54 Cabo San Pablo (new) Located at the end of provincial route A off national route 3 about 80 km southeast of Río Grande.
AR 55 Cabo San Diego

This lighthouse marks the extreme southeast corner of Tierra del Fuego and the western entrance to the Estrecho (Strait) of Le Maire. Accessible only by boat.

Isla de los Estados

AR 56 Año Nuevo Located on the Isla Observatorio, a small island off the north coast of the Isla de los Estados, a large island separated from Tierra de Fuego by the Estrecho de Le Maire. Accessible only by boat.
AR 57 San Juan de Salvamento (replica 2) Located high on a cliff at the eastern end of the Isla de los Estados, which is the last point that must be cleared by vessels eastbound around Cape Horn. Accessible only by boat in famously tumultuous seas.

Southern Tierra del Fuego

AR 58 Cabo San Pío

This lighthouse marks the southernmost point of Argentina, marking the entrance to the Beagle Channel (Canal de Beagle). Islands on the south side of the channel are in Chile. Accessible only by boat (land access is very difficult).
AR 58E Punta Espora This light marks the southern tip of Isla Gable, a large island that nearly blocks the Beagle Channel. Accessible only by boat.
AR 59 Punta San Juan Located in the Beagle Channel.
AR 60 Islotes Les Eclaireurs Islotes Les Eclaireurs

Tour operators sometimes call this the End of the World lighthouse (el faro del fin del mundo), although it is Faro San Juan de Salvamento that really earned that nickname. Located in the Beagle Channel marking the approach to Ushuaia, the southernmost permanently inhabited town in the world. Ecotours often pass or visit this site.
