IT 207 Castello Maniace latitude 37° 3' 11.5" N longitude 15° 17' 43.4" E The castle was built in the 1230s by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and named for Georgios Maniakes (Giorgio Maniace in Italian), the Greek Byzantine general who briefly liberated Siracusa from Arab rule in 1038.
