This page shows the documentation of the Central Lighthouses of West Norway.  You can always click on the photo of the light to go to a specific (larger resolution) copy.  Each lighthouse name is linked to (in our editorial opinion) the best reference site for that light.

There has been significant usage of the Lighthouse Directory prepared by Russ Rowlett (UNC).  Lighthouse coordinates are via Lighthouse Depot Database managed by Jeremy D'Entremont.  My thanks to them for providing this basis for understanding.

 

Bodø Area

NO 347 Storholmen(Saltstraumen) (old) The Saltstraumen is a narrow channel between the islands of Straumøya and Knapplandsøya, southeast of Bodø. Because it is the main outlet of the Skerstadfjord, the 150 meter wide channel has one of the strongest tidal currents anywhere in the world, regularly reaching a speed of 20 knots. Located near the east (Knapplandsøya) end of the highway 17 bridge over the Saltstraumen, about 10 km southwest of Løding.
NO 348 Storholmen (Saltstraumen) (new) Lantern and gallery mounted on a concrete bracket attached to the northeast pier of the highway 17 bridge over the Saltstraumen. Access to the light is by a ladder.
NO 349 Mefallsskjaer (Løding) Located on a small skerry in the Saltfjord about 400 m west of the harbor of Løding. Accessible only by boat.
NO 350 Bodo Molja Bodø Molja

Located at the end of the mole at the west end of Bodø harbor.

NO 350N Bodø (new)
NO 351 Nyholmen (1875) Located on the tip of Nyholmen, a narrow island, joined to the mainland by a causeway, that protects the north side of Bodø harbor.
NO 352 1907 Nyholmen Nyholmen (1907 ?)

Located at the extreme southwestern tip of Nyholmen.

NO 353 Tennholmen Located on a small island about 32 km due west of Bodø.
NO 354 Bjørnøy (1890) The house is probably in use as a private residence. Located at the east end of the island of Landegode about 8 km east northeast of Bodø.
NO 355 Bjørnøy (1972) This is a 9 m concrete post located just below the historic lighthouse.
NO 356 Landegode Landegode

The station was sold to Skagen Hotels of Bodø in 1994 and is operated as an inn and conference center. Located at the northeast tip of the island of Landegode about 8 km (5 mi) north of Bodø. Transportation from Bodø is available.

Upper Vestfjord

NO 357 Måløy-Skarholmen The lighthouse marks the entrance to the upper Vestfjord. Located on a small skerry about 20 km north of Bodø.
NO 358 Flatoy Flatøy

Located at the west end of Faltøy, a small island on the southeast side of the Vestfjord about 7 km west of Engeløya. Accessible only by boat.

NO 359 Tranøy

The light station has been developed as a tourist attraction; tours and overnight accommodations are available.  Located on a small island on the south side of the upper Vestfjord about 12 km north of Hamarøy. Accessible by road; a footbridge leads to the light station.

Tranoy
NO 360 Barøy Barøy is an island at the upper (east) end of the Vestfjord. the lighthouse marks the entrance to the Ofotfjord, which leads to the port of Narvik. Located at the west end of the island. Accessible only by boat; there should be at least a distant view from ferries sailing for Lødingen in the Lofotens.
NO 361 Rotvaer Located on a small island in the Vestfjord about 3 km southwest of Lødingen. Accessible only by boat; there should be at least a distant view from ferries sailing for Lødingen.

Lofoten Islands

NO 362 Lodingen Lødingen

Located on a promontory sheltering the south side of the harbor of Lødingen. There should be an excellent view from ferries arriving in Lødingen from the mainland.

NO 363 Skrova (Saltvaersholmen)

Located on a skerry just off the north coast of Skrova. Accessible only by boat, but there are excelent views from the village of Skrova, which is accessible by ferry from Skutvik on the mainland or from Vågan in the Lofotens.

NO 364 Moholmen This is an unusual design, and the lighthouse may be a rare survivor of its class. Located on a small island in the Vestfjord about 4 km southwest of Kabelvåg. Accessible only by boat.
NO 365 Brodrene Located on a skerry about 2.5 km west of Henningsvaer. Accessible only by boat.
NO 366 Hellandsøy Located at the south point of Hellandsøy, one of the islands occupied by the town of Hellingsvaer (next entry).
NO 367 Henningsvaer (1856) Henningsvaer, which calls itself the Venice of the Lofotens, is a town on several small islands off the southwestern tip of Austvågøy, connected to the larger island by a series of bridges. Located on the southwest side of Henningsvaer facing the Vestfjord.
NO 368 Henningsvaer (1935) Located in front of the historic lighthouse.
NO 369 Lyngvaer Located about 5 km (3 mi) north of Henningsvaer, marking the south entrance to the channel between the islands of Austvågøy and Gimsøy. Accessible only by boat.
NO 370 Glåpen (1857) Located on a promontory marking the west side of the entrance to the harbor of Sørvågen. Accessible by road.
NO 371 Glåpen (1985) Located in front of the historic lighthouse.
NO 372 Vaerøy Vaerøy, also called Sørland, is one of the outermost of the Lofoten Islands, about 18 km west southwest of Sørvågen. Located at the east side of the entrance to the harbor of Sørland. A road leads to or close to the lighthouse.
NO 373 Skomvær

Skomvaer is the westernmost island of the Lofoten ridge, 35 km west southwest of Sørland and a similar distance northwest of Myken. Located at the highest point of the island. Accessible only by boat in heavy seas.

NO 374 Laukvik Laukvik

Laukvik is a fishing village at the northwestern tip of Austvågøy. Accessible by road.

Vesterålen

NO 375 Litløy The lighthouse marks the entrance to the Eidsfjord, which separates the northern from the southern Lofotens. Located at the southwestern tip of Litløy, an island about 5 km west of Bø. Accessible only by boat.
NO 376 Nautneset (Hovden) Located on a promontory at the northernmost tip of Langøy, marking the entrance to the harbor of Hovden. Accessible by road.
NO 377 Anda The lighthouse marks a principal entrance to the Vesterålen, as the northwestern Lofotens are called. Located on a small island off the northern tip of Langøya, about 7 km north of Alsvåg. Accessible only by boat.
NO 378 Nordmela Sjaberget (Nordmela)

Located in the fishing village of Nordmela on the central north coast of Andøya.

NO 379 Andenes

The lighthouse is managed by the nearby Andøy Museum, which offers guided tours during the summer season.  Located at the northeastern tip of Andøya in Andenes (Andøy).

NO 380 Andeneshavn (Andøy Molja) Located at the end of the mole in Andenes (Andøy).

Troms County

NO 381 Hekkingen This light marks the entrance to Malangenfjord. Located on an island about 7 km west of Sommarøy. Accessible only by boat.
NO 382 Torsvåg see Located atop a small island off the northwestern tip of Vannøy; the station is connected to Vannøy by a short causeway.
NO 383 Fugløykalven This was considered one of the most isolated and difficult assignments of all Norwegian light stations. Located on a small island off the northwestern tip of Fugløy (Fugløykalven means "calf of Fugløy"). Accessible only by boat, and landing is difficult.

Finnmark County

NO 384 Fuglenes (Hammerfest) Fuglenes is the neighborhood on the north side of the harbor of Hammerfest. The lighthouse is at the end of a peninsula jutting out from Fuglenes and sheltering the harbor.
NO 385 Fruholmen (Upper) Located on a small island off the north side of Ingøy, about 20 km northeast of Hammerfest.
NO 386 Fruholmen (Lower) This auxiliary light guides ships around reefs near the lighthouse. Located at the base of the taller light.
NO 387 Gunnarnes Gunnarnes is a village on the east side of Rolvsøy. Accessible only by boat.
NO 388 Helnes  This is the second of the Nordkapp (North Cape) lighthouses. Located on a promontory at the eastern end of Magerøy.
NO 389 Slettnes

Without question this is the northernmost lighthouse on the mainland of Scandinavia.   Located on the Barents Sea coast about 1 km northwest of Gamvik at the end of the Nordkyn road (branch road Rv 888).

Settnes
NO 390 Kjølnes (Upper) The station is managed by the Polmakmoen Gjestegård (hotel) in nearby Polmak, and overnight accommodations are available. Located on the Barents Sea coast about 4 km east of Berlevåg.
NO 391 Kjølnes (Lower) This auxiliary light guides ships around reefs near the lighthouse. Located at the base of the taller light.
NO 392 Makkaur Located on a bluff east of the entrance to the Båtsfjord, about 40 km west of Vardø. Accessible only by boat.
NO 393 Skagodden Located at the northern point of the island of Vardøya, marking the entrance to the harbor of Vardø. Accessible by road.
NO 394 Vardø Vardø is at the extreme north easternmost tip of Norway; Russia lies across the Varangerfjord to the southeast. Located atop a huge rock island just off the harbor of Vardø.
NO 395 Vardøhavn Located at the end of the west mole protecting the harbor of Vardø.
NO 396 Nesseby Located on Lokholmen, a small island off the harbor of Nesseby, on the north side of the upper Varangerfjord. Accessible only by boat.
NO 397 Bøkfjord Located at the east entrance to the Bøkfjord, which leads from the south side of the Varangerfjord to the port of Sør-Varanger. This location is only 10 km from the Russian border. Accessible only by boat.
NO 398 Kapp Linné This is the world's northernmost traditional lighthouse, standing in latitude 78°03.8' N. Located on the point of the cape, marking the south side of the entrance to the Isfjord. Accessible only by boat or helicopter
